My corpmate Salie Gaterau (who is also a professional artist in real life by the name of Gabriel Cassata) and I were talking one day about how much is left visually unexplored in New Eden. What we can see in-game or through the existing artwork for Chronicles and other other lore resources leaves a lot of gaps in terms of what NPCs, interior environments, day-to-day life, and many other aspects of our fictional universe look like. There are many thousands of words written for backstory and lore in in-game descriptions, Chronicles, short fiction, scientific articles, EVE Source and other canon sources. Capsuleers engage with each other, NPCs, and the environment in countless ways every day--whether from their capsule, in stations, in corporate offices, or in their quarters. All of this provides a huge backdrop that is ripe for creative visual imagining.
So we decided to form Team Chroma, a player-organized group of skilled artists who play EVE Online and enjoy creating original fan art of EVE-related subjects that have so far been left mainly to the imagination, particularly subjects taken from the Chronicles and other canon resources. Currently, we consist of myself, Salie Gaterau, and Rixx Javix. We intend to keep the group small, with 6-10 consistently productive and highly skilled members.
You can find the Team Chroma Google+ Community here. There, our members share images of their work as well as what inspired it, how the work was created, and even occasional step-by-step demos and tutorials. We aim to showcase a mix of work, with about 60% done in a traditional painterly/sketchy fine art style and about 40% done in a creatively interpreted graphic design, sequential art, or 3D style. Members are expected to post relevant work at least once a month. While only Team Chroma members can create posts and comment on them, visitors are strongly encouraged to express their appreciation with +1's and by sharing and talking about our posts in various social media venues.
Want to be considered for Team Chroma? Please submit a request to Mynxee via email at mynxeeofeve@gmail.com that includes samples of your original work, which medium(s) you work in, and what EVE-related themes/topics interest you most. Current Team Chroma members will vote on new member acceptance based on our content goals and the submitting artist's demonstrated skill, creative vision, and readiness to post two relevant pieces upon acceptance. Regarding aesthetics, we are primarily interested in artists whose work leans more toward a painterly/traditional style rather than hyper-realistic perfection. We very much want to see the hand of the artist in the art. We endeavor to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for our members and to be respectful of the work of all artists in the EVE community.
Finally, Team Chroma is intended purely as an EVE Online fan art showcase. Artists are not compensated. We participate because we enjoy creating artwork related to the game we all love and sharing it with the wider community. Team Chroma artists are required to comply with CCP Games' EVE Online copyright at all times. If you want to use our artists' work or have need of their skills for an EVE Online or other project, feel free to contact them individually regarding availability and terms. As a creative professional, I urge you to make very sure you are informed about copyright matters. Please do not approach our artists for projects that would violate CCP's EVE Online IP copyrights.
